I’ve been to Marseille numerous times and with different people. You’ll hear differing views about Marseille, but in my opinion, it’s definitely worth spending a day or two. Is it a must see? Or a place to avoid?

Bonjour! Thanks for stopping by.

I've lived in the Languedoc region of France--also known as Poor Man's Provence because it has almost everything its glitzier neighbour has, but, as I've discovered, it costs far less to live here. I was 68 when I decided to move to France--alone. I knew no one in the country and barely spoke the language. It continues to be an amazing adventure. I hope you'll come back for my stories about my life in France.

Hope to see you soon.

Great article and very accurate Janice. I live in the Languedoc and usually visit Marseille and Cassis a couple of times a year. My favourite big city in France.

Despite living in France for more than 20 years, I have never been to Marseille. As Janice points out, it has a mixed reputation. Having read her article, I'm intrigued and want to go.

Thanks, Kit. It's worth a visit, especially if you are going to Provence anyway. I'll be interested to know what you think.

Convinced me, those photos are great! Besides seafood, what else should we be eating during our visit?

Thanks, Ric. Not sure I have any particular recommendations--funnily enough, I've had some decent Italian food. If you like moule (mussels) you'll find plenty of opportunities to sample moules frites (French fries) Bon appetite!

Thanks Janice! I have long been interested in moving to France when I retire, but prefer Bretagne. I do need to visit Marseille before making a final decision tho!

Brittany is lovely, Melody. I've spent some time there, but I do hope you give the south a look before you decide--and visit Marseille while you're there.
