Like a sleeping dragon awakening from a prolonged slumber, Yangon, formerly Rangoon, has begun to stretch its wings. Crumbling old colonial buildings, many with triffid-esqe foliage twisting out of their aged brickwork, make for a dramatic backdrop to a city steeped in history but today brimming with fresh optimism for the future.
Known as the city of ‘blood, dreams and gold’, Yangon is Myanmar’s commercial capital and the most culturally experimental and cosmopolitan city in the country. Over the last couple of years adventurous and ambitious foreigners and Myanmar nationals have begun flocking to this stirring metropolis.
It is a city ripping off its tawdry old clothes and adorning a new outfit, ready to once more take up its title as Princess of the East.
